Why aren't people happy? Well, the answer might be about perspective rather than reality. Many people may indeed be "happy" but they don't realize it because they are confusing happiness with elation.

According to a 2020 survey 14% of American adults say they are very happy, down from 31% who said the same in 2018.

Today's special guest, Entreprenaur Stephen D'Angelo, says people often question their level of happiness both at work and at home. He says the key to achieving true satisfaction is understanding the difference between happiness and elation. Too often we think elation is happiness. It is not. Elation is the positive emotional response to unique events in our lives; getting married, winning the World Series or Superbowl, getting a job or promotion, a new romance, earning a degree, winning a contest, etc. These events don't happen every day and they shouldn't. The problem is, we expect to feel elation daily. When we don't, we wonder why we are not "happy".

Stephen D'Angelo is a best selling author, leadership coach, and business executive with D'Angelo Advisors.
