The Slender Man Controversy: Fantasy or Reality?

Two twelve year old-girls, from suburban Wisconsin, enthralled with the fictional Internet character, Slender Man, wanting to be worthy of his esteem, engage in a ritual sacrifice of a close friend.  Fortunately, miraculously, the friend was not killed...but was stabbed nineteen times!  How could this happen?  Is this simply a problem of delusional children who, by 12 years of age, should have known the difference between fantasy and reality.  Or is something more sinister going on...that has less to do with the supernatural than with the technological, maturational, and the familial.
