If we thought about it, we might say this is the goal of education in general and higher education in particular. Whether we are bent over a shop table or standing in mock court, ppl are attempting to prove themselves in some way, bettering their condition. It is not a guarantee though we might notice priviledge does become a lifestyle of some. It is not what draws the people striving for a better way, to step into the fracas. It is a simpler connection. If I apply myself I might as well aim high and see what comes.  Maybe it is fear of failure. Maybe pride. Maybe it is an unstoppable genius. Whatever the source, doing what it takes has been our consistent call to arms. And in some way, this adage applies nicely to our chosen field of study. Learning enough, that we can extend benefit to family, community and nation.  Is it any wonder people roll their eyes?  We are community. For all our faults and flaws, we try, imperfectly but we try. And out of the numbers who crowd our doors there is always a handful who are a grade above. Not through ambition but for talent. Since the 16th century and possibly before, men have wanted reliable guidance. How better than to teach a man the tools needed to calculate an ethical path forward? I'm hard pressed to think this is voluntary. Its necessary, that we preserve the kind of knowledge that intimidates oligarch and despot alike. That may be the only level of accountability beyond manipulation.  So is there a rightness in that?  Absolutely. But make that choice for yourself. So mote it be.
