Perception is reality?  If I accept that I accept a duality exists about the Craft.  Whose perception matters? Is it important, those outside the door have a favourable opinion of those within?  Encouraging unrestrained opportunity is about as sensible as suppressing the natural rights of mankind. That seems to be a proof that perception can, in the looseness of some minds, at some moments of distraction- can be made a reality. You are right to point out that perception varies. It always has always will. And I can't disagree with you. But when the hoi polloi wanted Socrates dead, fact/reality was ignored. The perception that changed 7 years later and made his accusers and judges place statutes around the city to honour him couldn't save his life.  The trial of Socrates has taught us about a vulnerability that is part of humankind.  Is the Gentle Craft actually claiming immunity to judgment by perception?   For certain, becoming a true mason blends talent, ability, curiousity and a desire to understand.  It is a rich palette of ideas made available to the discerning member to do with as he chooses.

Perhaps attendance is not metaphysical.  The advances of science are too complicated and best left for others.  Perhaps class stratification is what the masonic wind leaves behind in the mind.  Some bits fall short.  No one has ever died because he lacked imagination but many have died for lack of water!  But in our search for authenticity and meaning, some people are afraid of us.  Did we occur by evolution or were we created?
