Tensions between police and the Black and Hispanic neighborhood of New York City are flaring in light of social distancing orders. The officers' enforcement of social-distancing rules have led some to believe that the New York City Police Department is engaging in a racist double standard---arresting & ticketing minority individuals for violating social distancing orders while giving free masks to White individuals committing the same violations.
While minority residents were arrested, photographs circulated across social media showing police officers handing out masks to mostly White visitors at parks throughout New York City. Mayor Bill de Blasio, who denounced the "stop and frisk" practices of his predecessor's administration, has found himself having to explain why enforcement of social distancing in minority neighborhoods is tinged with racism.
