Burrell was born on July 31, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan to a musical family and began playing guitar at the age of 12. His talent and spirit changed the world of music and the world itself, where he proved color or race has no bounds and the world will share and appreciate great talent.

A consummate artist Burrell recorded with a wide range of prominent musicians.

Kenny Burrell attend the Segregated African-American Miller High School in Detroit, it was founded in 1933, but from this educational facility came some of the most talent musician and singers in America.

Detroit’s Public Schools from the first grade through high school. In my brief  high school teaching career—interrupted by the military draft—I taught Martha Reeves (The Vandellas) and jazz singer Kim Weston in my Girl’s Voice Class at the old Miller High School. Miller High also produced Milt Jackson, Della Reese, and Kenny Burrell—all before I joined the staff!
