McKinney’s father was also an elected politician and exposed his daughter early to the civil rights struggle and encouraged her to go into politics. McKinney, who earned a B.A. in international relations and an M.A. in Law and Diplomacy, and a Ph.D., along the way became a teacher, university professor, community activist and politician.
