Edith Nawakwi, was the first female Zambian Minister of Finance, and at the young age of 38. She holds a Masters degree in energy, economics and environment from the University of London Imperial College. Nawakwi was virtually unknown until the 1991 campaign for the Movement of Multiparty Democracy. After the elections, she was appointed deputy minister of energy and water development and later promoted to full cabinet level.
In 1996, she was appointed as Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries before she was made Finance minister. She is now the current president for Forum for Democracy and Development, and is vying to become Zambia’s first female president.
