A recap of the season opener from Albert Park

Albert Park in Melbourne Australia played host to the first Formula One Grand Prix of the 2014 season. Qualifying on Saturday lead to a few surprises. Four-time world champion driver for Red Bull, Sebastian Vettel, did not make the top three. However, Vettel’s teammate Daniel Ricciardo qualified for second.  2008 world champion Lewis Hamilton with Mercedes, was in pole position and his teammate Nico Rosberg, and was third.

On race-day fortunes began to change at the drop of the flag when Nico Rosberg immediately moved into the lead, and held it throughout the race.  By lap seven fans were disappointed to see, both Lewis Hamilton and, Sebastian Vettel were forced into retirement, due to car trouble.  Lap eight was a preview of who would end up on the podium. In the lead was Rosberg, Ricciardo, followed by Kevin Magnussen, the rookie driver for McLaren.

Some notable action on the grid was the very dependable Valtteri Bottas with Williams-Martini F1 who started 15th and worked his way up to 7th before ending up at 10th, giving Williams-Martini more points in the first rave than they garnered all year in 2013.

Update: Due to a violation of fuel levels, Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo was disqualified, thereby moving Kevin Magnussen up to 2nd place and his McLaren teammate Jensen Button, into 3rd.
