Tonight  THE TRUTH ABOUT THE NEW BLACK PANTHER PARTY, "[The original Panthers are] has-been wannabe Panthers. Nobody can tell us who we can call ourselves. The New Black Panther Party, originally founded in 1989 by Dallas radio personality Aaron Michaels, hoped to engage black citizens in community activism. One of its main goals was to increase black representation on the Dallas school board. NBPP also attempted to reduce drug dealing in certain black neighborhoods.  Michaels was responsible for bringing mass media attention to the organization after he encouraged the use of gun violence to threaten a Philadelphia school board who had failed to appropriately reprimand a teacher. This individual had been caught on tape referring to students as "little n*ggers."

Michaels states that his reason for founding the New Black Panther Party stems from his opinion that the original Panthers were not extreme enough in their tactics. He considered them to be too complacent and too peaceful--while they flashed their arms, they failed to implement them in a way that could have been advantageous. However, Michaels has distanced himself from the NBPP because of their shift towards a more "racist" and "anti-Semitic" ideology.

Aaron Michaels was a former radio show producer and community activist in Dallas, Texas, is the founder of the first official chapter of the New Black Panther Party. He was inspired after Michael McGee spoke on a show he had been the producer for--he was attracted to the militant Black Power rhetoric that was the foundation of McGee's ideology."
