"SICKLE-CELL ANEMIA RESEARCH FOUNDATION

Established  by the Black Panther party in 1971to test and create a cure for sickle-cell anemia ( a deadly blood disease that affects primarily Black Americans), the Sickle-Cell Anemia Research Foundation informs people about sickle-cell anemia and maintains a national advisory committee of doctors to research this crippling disease.

In conjunction with the People’s Free Medical Research Health Clinics the Sickle -Cell  Anemia Research Foundation to date has tested nearly half a million people throughout the country in the last three years.

While more research  is needed to discover treatment and a cure for the disease, people must first be informed about it and tested to see if they have it or its side effects. To accomplish this, the Sickle -Cell Anemia Research Foundation publishes and disseminates brochures and other printed materials with facts about sickle-cell anemia." HUEY P. NEWTON "The Black Panther Party Service to the People Programs

Sickle cell anemia (sickle cell disease) is a disorder of the blood caused by an inherited abnormal hemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying protein within the red blood cells). The abnormal hemoglobin causes distorted (sickled) red blood cells. The sickled red blood cells are fragile and prone to rupture. When the number of red blood cells decreases from rupture (hemolysis), anemia is the result. This condition is referred to as sickle cell anemia. The irregular sickled cells can also block blood vessels causing tissue and organ damage and pain.
