"The wooden two-story church that was built on the present site in 1872 was destroyed by the devastating earthquake of August 31, 1886. The present edifice was completed in 1891 under the pastorate of the Rev. L. Ruffin Nichols. "  The "edifice" is the very front of the building, it was only allowed to be brick so that each time the Church was destroyed the property lines were not altered by whites who sought to steal the very land it was built on."The magnificent brick structure with encircling marble panels were restored, redecorated and stuccoed during the years of 1949-51 under the leadership of the Rev. Frank R. Veal. " This is how our history is always written with major gaps, what was the cause of the church having to be restored in the years 1949-1951?  The earthquake of 1886 was some 133 years before the restoration?  My Grandfather taught us of the Night Riders burning of Black Churches and the terror that they heaped on the heads of blacks after Slavery, stories from his parents and some he lived himself. After the failed revolt of Denmark Vessey the black churches were continuously burned down whenever the KKK wanted to remind us we had nothing not even God
