So often the events and seasons of our lives seem random, like indistinguishable grains of sand slipping through an hourglass until finally we run out of time. Yet, the underlying message of this poem emphasizes a divinely appointed purpose in each. When understood properly, these familiar lines form a comforting reminder of God's sovereignty in our lives.

Perhaps as you look back over 2012, you feel disappointed. Maybe the year allotted more time for tears than laughter, more time for uprooting than planting, more time for tearing down than building up. Remember, God has a purpose for every season! Trust that a beautiful plan is unfolding in his time.

I urge you not to go into 2013 with regrets, but rather, lift up your eyes with certainty, knowing "that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns." (Philippians 1:6, NLT)
