Short story. Long, long, long, long time ago, I'd shared a townhouse with three other college roommates. When I was packing to move my Ray, Goodman and Brown album was missing. I accused each and everyone of them of stealing it. And to this day I think the one that I'm still hanging with got that album. I can see it in her eyes. I'm going to mention it to her this week. And, I'm going to look straight in her eye balls when I ask her. LOL

D.A. grew up in the musically enriched city of Philadelphia, P.A. His father (Kae Williams Sr.) was one of the pioneer African American broadcasters. His brother, (Kae Jr.) a major music producer and member of the first African American band (Breakwater) signed to Arista Records under Clive Davis. D.A. himself is a drummer, transformational speaker, spiritual inquisitor, video editor and most recently CPO of Full CirKle Media Group. D.A. says “it took many years to understand the importance of self responsibility to develop one's own potential". He has since learned the importance of stepping into yesterday to frame tomorrow today. Following in the footsteps of his father and brother, D.A. is pioneering his own Internet radio network (Full Cirkle Media) which is committed to maintaining the rich musical and broadcast legacies while providing balanced spiritual programming to assist with personal transformation. D.A. possesses a heartfelt conviction that now is the time to “BE THE CHANGE” we want to see while being the humans becoming that we are. Tune in to the broadcast for a unique experience.

Show Notes

Photobucket For Black History month on WDKK, we will highlight the accomplishment of many pioneer black on-air personalities. We will share the often overlooked and ignored story of the growth and development of Black Urban Radio. In the early days of radio, a mixture of positive and negative stereotypes characterized African Americans. Radio shows such as "Beulah" and "Amos and Andy" featured Black characters that were carefree, inarticulate, and inept, while broadcasts by bandleader Duke Ellington, singer Paul Robeson, and others exposed predominantly white radio audiences to the work of talented and refined Black artists. Such images of African Americans frequently appeared in early radio broadcasts, yet an empty space existed for Blacks in positions of management and ownership.

Photobucket Photobucket "Rhythm and Blues" programs hosted by Black disc jockeys attracted more white listeners after World War II, and the exposure of white kids to Black urban music began to change American society. Black radio fueled the popularity of rock-and-roll and was instrumental in lower cultural barriers between Blacks and whites in the 1950s. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the presence and influence of African American on-air personalities dominated Black radio. During this time, many Black disc jockeys became caught up in the backlash that followed the civil rights advances and cultural changes. Some also lost their jobs to the "payola" scandal that implicated announcers for receiving cash payments from recording companies in exchange for playing certain records on the air. Also, by the late 1950s, white rock -and-roll "DJs" such as Dewey Phillips and Wolfman Jack were imitating Black styles to gain ratings. Following the scandal, station managers increasingly resorted to standardized formats and play lists that restricted the freedom and influence of disc jockeys. Yet, Black radio continued to emphasize individual personalities throughout the 1960s, as DJs such as Al Benson in Chicago and Georgie Woods in Philadelphia echoed the emerging militancy of Black youth and acted as peacemakers during inner-city riots. If you want to hear the rest of the story, tune into WDKK RADIO as we honor the pioneers of Black Radio.

Photobucket A trio of sisters with a strong gospel base, the Emotions (based in Chicago) were one of the leading female R&B acts of the '70s. Lead singer Sheila Hutchinson and her sisters Wanda and Jeanette were only teenagers when they crashed the soul charts in 1969 with the engaging "So I Can Love You," but they sang gospel as children and enjoyed secular fame locally before signing with Memphis-based Volt and working with producers Isaac Hayes and David Porter. When Stax folded in 1975, the group hooked up with Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire, an association that led to the number one pop/R&B hit "Best of My Love" in 1977. Two years after Best of My Love, Maurice White and the Emotions collaborated on "Boogie Wonderland," which was both a number two R&B and number six pop hit. They issued three more albums on White's ARC label from 1979 to 1981, but were unable to duplicate their earlier success. They moved to the Red label for the 1984 LP Sincerely, which included the single "All Things Come in Time." They issued three other singles from the album, but none made much impact, though each one charted. They then signed with Motown, but issued only one album, If I Only Knew. Sheila Hutchinson was a featured vocalist on Garry Glenn's "Feels Good to Feel Good" in 1987. Pam and Jeanette Hutchinson did background vocals on Helen Baylor's gospel song "There's No Greater Love" in 1990. Wanda Hutchinson and Jeanette sang on Earth, Wind & Fire's Heritage in 1990.

Pt 1 - Glenn Jones Photobucket With a voice as memorable as his lyrics sincere, GLENN has crafted some of R&B's most significant love songs to date. After enjoying success with chart-topping hits including “Here I Go Again,” “We've Only Just Begun (The Romance Is Not Over)”, “Baby Come Home” “I’ve Been Searching” “Show Me” and His Current Single “I Wonder Why,” JONES returns to the music scene a little older, a lot wiser and with his warm, distinctive riffs in tow. Sine that time Brown has dazzled fans all over the world as lead vocalist for the Delfonics and The Stylistics, replacing Mr. Russell Thompkins Jr., the original lead vocalist. He was the first lead vocalist of the Delfonics inducted into the 98.7 Kiss FM Hall Of Fame, in New York City, the NAACP Hall Of Fame, in Atlanta, Georgia in 1996, receiving a NAACP award for his accomplishments also, as lead vocalist of The Delfonics.
