JOINT CUSTODY. When and when isn't it a good idea?

The deck is stacked against a married couple making it until "death do us part." However, CHILDREN ARE FOREVER. In a perfect world, a child thrives spending half of the time with both parents. BUT, the world ISN'T perfect, and neither are the PARENTS in it.  WHEN IS JOINT CUSTODY NOT A GOOD IDEA? Why will one parent enjoy the kid's entire childhood while the other will see their child every other Thursday at the park?
