Meeting facilitator and author Larry Dressler describes how many meetings become heated events, full of anger, polarization, and confusion. The result of this heat is very often little of value is accomplished and people are left angry and unhappy. Even worse, the tactics and techniques most often taught have little effect, and may even make things worse. Instead of tactics, Larry Dressler points out the critical importance of the leader's presence. To create that presence, the leader must develop personal skills and self-awareness. To become a master fire tender, a leader must learn the six ways of standing in the fire, and practice and cultivate personal awareness.
