Repent from your heart...not just from your lips

After King David of Israel had committed a grevious sin, he repented. This is a part of his repentant prayer  in Psalm 51:

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me (verse 10). 

David acknowledged that his sin went deeper than his actions. His sin actually stemmed from his heart and his spirit. The Precious Holy Spirit inspired David to write this Psalm to teach us, even today, that God is looking for people to repent from the heart, not just from the mouth, because as Matthew 15:19 -20 says -

19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

20 These are the things which defile a man....

A heart of sin which defiles a man can only be cleansed by God.
