Derrick A. Gilbert
A native of Little Rock, Arkansas and the second of five children raised in a single parent home. Derrick Gilbert is no stranger to hard times and the need for expression and praise. With a fervent belief in God, Derrick started singing with his older brother Joma at the age of 8. Traveling from Little Rock to Memphis gave him his first taste of the life of a gospel singer.
Influenced by Gospel Legends, Commissioned, Fred Hammond, Take 6 and the Winans. Derrick began singing and writing songs at the age of 12. By the age of 15 he was managing an acapella group called “Pure Harmony”. Derrick moved to Minnesota at the age of 18 and attended Music Tech in Minneapolis, where he studied Audio Engineering. He also attended St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, MN where he majored in Business.
In 2001 Derrick moved to New York in pursuit of a record deal and not only found one, but was also fortunate enough to start an indie label and released his first major Independent record entitled “No Apologies” in addition to winning first place at The World Famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem, N.Y. Because of the success of the album, Derrick was invited to Paisley Park by Prince.
