The history of America was of immigration.

In 1620,  100 English colonists, called Pilgrims" cane to America seeking religious freedom.

They landed near Plymouth, Massachusetts, marking European migration to  America, that had been inhabited by Amerindian people.

Until 1882, the US government had  an open door immigration policy.  In 6 Congress passed legislation which marked a turn towards tougher policies for both legal and illegal immigrants.

Americans take pride in their "melting pot" society (a term coined by an immigrant, Israel Zangwill)

Contributions from immigrant cultures modified and enriched Anglo-Protestant culture of settlers. The  threat to American's identity is Mexican immigration that is splitting America in two.

"As their numbers increase, Mexican Americans are seen as  increasingly comfortable with their culture  some have shown  disrespect of American culture",.

Trump;s  has demanded funding for a wall, to keep Mexicans out at te cost of 5 billion dollars.  It  comes with the cost of a goverment shut down  with a threat of A NATIONAL EMERGENCY,while  Conservatives and Liberals  fight.

If you want a symbolic gesture, don't burn the flag; wash it.

Norman Thomas

I hear that melting-pot stuff a lot, and all I can say is that we haven't melted.”
