My name is Rosanna Griffin and I own Athena's Closet, Inc., a plus size women's consignment shop. How did I get here? I took the scenic route.
I started making my own clothes when I was 9 and could probably fill a truck with ribbons won at County and State Fairs in California. Over the years this included learning about color, line, style, fabrics, fit, etc. During this time I also gained experience in marketing, training and many other skills I use every day.
At age 12 I started working - as early as CA law would allow - and have worked my entire life since with the exception of a few years having and raising 3 children - 1 girl, 2 boys. It was less expensive to stay home, so I challenged myself by growing/processing food for the family, baking all of our bread and learning to knit and crochet. I ran a hobby/craft business later in life for about 4 years.
My decision to open a plus size shop came about due to an illness and the resulting weight gain. I had no idea where to buy clothes, what size I needed or even who to ask. But, I was appalled with the treatment I received in most places. Plus size women are often relegated to the back room or the basement and smaller sized sales clerks can be very rude with no understanding of the problems plus size women struggle with.
Athena’s Closet, Inc. was designed and developed with all of these things in mind. Over the past 3 years it has become the premier plus size shopping experience in Denver with a bigger selection than most retail stores. In the entire Denver metro area there are only 2 independently owned plus size shops - Athena's Closet and Christine's Upscale Plus.
