US Election Apathy in the African Community

As the election in the United States approaches, some African and African American people are choosing to sit out the election and not vote for Obama. Some are choosing to vote for Rumney, many basing their argument on religious grounds as it pertains to the Gay rights issues and some based on sentiments about Obama's efforts in Africa or lack thereof. What ever the issues, is apathy  justified, and what is the price? Are these Africans shooting themselves in the foot?
