Effective communication is one of the top 10 soft skills that employers seek in new hires, however, honing one’s communication skills is rarely considered as an area of professional development. Language is a powerful resource and an asset along the path of professional advancement. The ability to shift language to match the situation requires metalinguistic awareness and an understanding that language is dynamic. In instances when the language choice does not match the purpose, the speaker’s message may be misinterpreted or the speaker may be deemed as less educated or qualified.

The U.S is culturally and linguistically diverse yet Standard American English remains the hallmark of the nation’s workplaces and schools. Language bias exists and is a form of hidden discrimination.
