African American Missionaries their historical influence in the black church and in the world

We will be discussing the historical legacy of African American missionaries. Our guest today will be Missionary Janel Bowles. Janel’s journey began as a college student, experiencing her first flight during a short-term mission trip to Jamaica. “I remembered being so nervous, I had never flown before”, Janel recalls. Thirteen years later, this seasoned traveler continues to fulfill her calling throughout the world, conducting cross cultural trainings, helping others discover their life’s work calling. In the summers of 1997 and 2008, Janel volunteered with the English Language Institute/China, as an English trainer in Changsha and Shanghai, China. Being an African American woman in China has been a rich and rewarding experience. “My difference is what has drawn people to me”, Janel observes. Having a thick skin and a great sense of humor has helped her when faced with the Chinese astonishment with her as an African-American woman. “I was quite a celebrity!” Janel jokes about her ‘celebrity’ status and the frequent requests for photographs when out in public. Prior to Janel’s most recent trip to China, she headed up Temple University’s Community Outreach and Hiring program through the Human Resources department.
