Determined. Self-motivated. Victorious. Words that have been used to describe Victoria Mangiapane, the 2016 Eastern LI Take Steps Shining Star, since she was a toddler. Diagnosed with Crohn's disease at age 12, after a year of weight loss and increasing fatigue, Victoria, now 17 years old, has never let this debilitating disease stop her from pursuing her goals and dreams. While sleeping, Victoria suffered a catstrophic seizure and other complications from malnutrition. It was discovered that her duodenum had strictured,a rare occurrence, and food was unable to pass from her now enlarged stomach. Thanks to her amazing gastroenterologist, Dr. James Markowitz and the staff at Cohen's Children Medical Center, Victoria and her family were teamed up with two surgeons who would change her life forever...Dr. Stephen Dolgin and Dr. Jose Prince. Through a 10 1/2 hour surgery, Victoria received a duodenal strictoplasty through laporoscopy and made medical history. She was the first pediatric case to receive this experimental procedure. "A medical miracle that will open doors," praised her exhausted but rejoiceful family.
