In 2004 Kay decided to create a vehicle by which people of color and other ethnic groups would be encouraged to celebrate their outer beauty, in particular their beautiful skin tones. In her opinion, society had definitely missed the mark on its definition of true beauty and Kay wanted to help set the record straight. Through divine inspiration, Shades of Mocha was launched along with her first line of custom t-shirts. Kay is planning on expanding Shades to include sportswear, lingerie and handbags. Besides managing the day to day operations of Shades of Mocha, Kay is also penning her first novel – a gritty, no holds barred coming of age story titled Kamaria Alexis. According to Kay “this novel is going to lay everything on the table about life and the consequences of some of the actions we as females take. It tackles the issues concerning teen pregnancy, promiscuity, the loss of a parent, unscrupulous relatives, abusive relationships and the taboo subject of abortion. If I save just one girl from making the same mistakes as the heroine in this novel, then my job is done. A mentoring program for females aged 11 – 18 years will be icing on the cake.” Films, Life, and Positive Thoughts
