Originally from South Africa, Michael Friedlander is an international business attorney who has lived in Los Angeles for over thirty years. He is also a former CEO of an international music company and CEO of an international architectural design company.

Michael has recently written Detecting the Scam: Nelson Mandela's Gift. In the book, he has used Nelson Mandela's inspirational "Gift" to help us detect scams, become better negotiators and people, and refine our common sense.

The book explores recent high-profile scams through the lens of Nelson Mandela's negotiating skills and moral authority. It explores the connection between leadership and moral authority, and the failure of our finest and brightest to put integrity ahead of self-interest. It also lays out the principles of The Duck School, the school of common sense.

In Michael’s words, “In harsh economic and political times—and because we want to believe so badly and are so desperate—we are tempted to embrace the lies upon which scams are based. Therefore, it is important that we do what we can to retain a sense of balance and identify the lies.”

Michael states that we also face three crises today: (a) the crisis of pervasive cheating; (b) the crisis of corruption; and (c) the crisis of those who look the other way as those around them cheat and act corruptly.
