According to the US Census Bureau there are 26 million small businesses in the United States and every day another 2,300 Americans decide to start their own businesses (that's over 840,000 per year!). (Even more in this economy as people start even new businesses to supplement their income, as people become unemployed or who fear they might) The Small Business Administration estimates that fully 56% will fail within four years and even more will fail after that. This happens for a number of reasons but it doesn’t have to be that way. Today I have invited Cathy Demers, an award winning entrepreneur and mentor to successful entrepreneurs to talk about the top three mistakes that many small business owners continue to make that seriously jeopardized their potential for business success, and what they can do to avoid, or stop, making those mistakes. Let me tell you a bit about Cathy and why I think she is a great resource to entrepreneurs and small business owners. After completing a university degree in economics, Cathy went on to amass a combined 20 years in business development from Microsoft, IBM, and as co-founder of The Electric Mail Company, Inc. This company was successfully listed as a stock exchange traded company while Cathy served as President and CEO. Cathy has collected a pile of awards and accolades from her peers. She has won the Canadian Woman Entrepreneur Award (Western Canada), the Business in Vancouver Top 40 Under 40 Award (for which she has slight regret she no longer qualifies), and has twice been nominated for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. In addition, she holds a degree in Economics, has mentored and coached successful entrepreneurs, and has been a keynote speaker for diverse groups including the BC Ministry of Small Business and the National Research Council.
