As the NCAA tournament began, the experts tried to figure out what upsets were real and which ones were pipe dreams. In either case, two heavy favorites had their NCAA Championship hopes crushed. Michigan State was picked by many to win the whole tournament, and they will not even be paying in the second round. West Virginia was not a big favorite to win it all, but some thought their pressing style of play could cause fits as they advanced in the tournament. However, they were matched up against a Stephen F. Austin team that takes care of the ball and can create turnovers just as well as West Virginia. Stephen F. Austin was not intimidated by the West Virginia press and when they broke it, they went right to the basket. They forced the tempo and an average West Virginia offense could not keep up.

Middle Tennessee State wavered the mini runs by Michigan State and caused a cruicial turnover late in the game that sealed the game. The pesky Blue Raiders stood toe to toe with the powerful Spartans. They were aggressive at times, and took some punches but at the end of the game, they pumped their fists in the air and advanced to Sunday's second round.
