I was born in Rhode Island and moved with my family to San Francisco at age thirteen. Soon after, I saw my first Japanese film, ‘Seven Samurai,’ which immediately captured my imagination. As a result, I became enthralled with Japanese history and traditions, and soon became a teen-age expert on Japanese cinema. I vowed to live in Japan and in my early twenties, after attending San Francisco State University and traveling through Europe and North Africa, I indeed did go. I remained for the next twenty years; working as an English teacher while learning the language, martial arts (aikido) and making friendships that will last a lifetime.
