    in History

In an area 90 minutes northeast of Indianapolis rests a small town named Fairmount. At first glance it may seem like any old sleepy small town off the beaten path - but while driving through the town of less than 3,000 one might just be surprised by two larger-than-life people who called this very place home. Working with the President of Fairmount Historical Museum, Cole Reeves, we discuss the life and death of movie icon James Dean. In addition to all of the items in the museum on James Dean, there is also a room devoted to the legendary American Cartoonist Jim Davis. Best known as the creator of Garfield, Jim Davis also calls Fairmount, Indiana his home.  Visit the Fairmount Historical Museum at their website JamesDeanArtifacts.com. The museum is located at 203 E Washington St. in Fairmount, Indiana. They are a volunteer organization so if you would like to find a way to become involved please contact them! "Take Your Hands Off Of Me!!!:" Preventing DomesticViolence

    in History

Our guest today is Dr. Alice Belcher.  Dr. Belcher is the author of FAMILY VIOLENCE: PREVENTION FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITIES,  This book is the first book in an important series of books on Family Violence, written by Dr. Alice Belcher.  Dr. Belcher is founder of the Certification Domestic Violence Advocate training program in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
In her book, Dr. Belcher introduces the genre of “Family Violence Prevention” written through the lens of what Belcher coins, the “Black Female Activist Lens.” Family Violence is a multi-billion-dollar industry. Because of acts of violence by abusers against family members, entire social service systems are supported through the violent behavior of abusers. Dr. Belcher introduces a new paradigm of prevention and speaks to "domestic violence" vs “family violence” as a genre.  In doing so, she introduces a more expansive description and approach.
?Todays conversation will focus on Dr. Belchers book and the work being done in our community to combat this awful condition.  Our discussion will seek to understand the impact on victims and the root causes of those who are abusers.
The goal and objective of The Black Reality Think Tank is to understand the past, dissect the present and support implementing change for a meaningful future.

    Episode 3 - Lead Gasoline

    in History

Thomas Midgley, Jr was considered a genius of his time, but now we know better.
Thomas Midgley, Jr. was born on May 18, 1889 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, a quiet, comely river town 31 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. A curious, athletic, and affable lad, Thomas flourished under the tutelage of his inventor father. He would later attend Cornell University, where he received a degree in mechanical engineering. It was here that Thomas took to carrying a periodic table with him at all times, a tool that would prove much more useful to him than a mechanic's wrench. (more on the podcast)

    SAY IT AIN'T SO!!!
WORLD WEEKLY NEWS OCTOBER 10, 2011 STATES: "CAMBRIDGE, U.K. – New research done by the University of Cambridge proves conclusively that Christopher Columbus was a black man."
"DNA analysis of the remains of Christopher Columbus, done by forensic scientists at the University of Cambridge, prove beyond a shadow a doubt that the famed navigator was of African descent."
“A five-hundred-year-mystery has been solved,”  said Wellington Malley, the head of the Cambridge research team.  “Even though Columbus was born in Genoa, and spoke and wrote in Spanish most of his life, the DNA is clear – Columbus was 100% African.  We believe he was from the west coast, probably from what is now Cameroon.”
Are we to blame for this cramp? Really?
