This is Black History Month. While it is imperative that all Americans understand the History of Blacks in this country, has OUR focus on the past stopped US from understanding and seeing the present? In the present the same institution of Slavery exists in a modified form and is trying to go global again under the guise of Privatized Prisons. Blacks still are the target of Jim Crow stand your ground laws, and Stop and Frisk procedures. The Media still puts out negative images of blacks framing us like the characters of Minstrel Shows of the past and portraying the Black Man as a two bit criminal. The Poverty rate is worst than what it was when Dr. King organized the Poor People Campaign and more children live in poverty. In some places like Chicago groups of 3 or more blacks just talking on the street are considered a crime. Blacks that get together and strive to organize the community to solve problems are considered gangs and Rico laws are used to stop their activities. There is a War that is openly said to target the black and brown communities that incarcerates millions for Marijuana making them 21st Century Slaves.

So have we allowed our focus on the past to blind us to the present and if so what is the solution to moving our attention to the Present to deal with the situations that confront our community?

We'll be Defining Consciousness and talking about what it means to be Conscious in a society that is OPPRESSING our community. Forming Bonds between different "Conscious" communities and seeking solutions on how those different communities can work together to reach solutions to the problems the system that oppresses us all creates.
