Some answered the call to serve, while others were called to serve, however, we all served in a far off nations just as our fathers and grandfathers had served in the pastand just as others continue to serve. We fought, died and were maimed by enemies who proved indeed formidable and cunning. We endured the senseless rules of engagement.
We followed orders and quickly lost the innocence of our youth, seemingly hardened overnight into veterans. We soon learned there was to be no glory, and no honor in fighting these enemies, only constant fears, nightmares, and the thoughts we would never see our home and loved ones again. We fought battles big and small, winning some, while losing others, in wars and wars that not been declared. We had, only one thought in mind, that of returning home after our tour of duty.
Some of us returned broken in body, mind and spirit, scars visible and for some, the nightmares continued, so did their battles with their own inner demons created by their service. The lucky ones were able to beat the demons brought on by service in war and the feelings of being a forgotten Veteran. So we put the battles and horrors of war behind us and went back to our lives the United States of America the country we served.
