This is a rebroadcast.  Since school is jsut starting back up, Ithought this appropriate.

My guest this week is James Piper Bond, the President of Living Classrooms. It was founded in 1985 by two former McDonough School teachers, and they believed in educating through doing. Not a new concept, but these guys made it work.

The goal of the organization is to strengthen inner city communities in order to break the cycle of poverty in the inner city. The Fells Point campus is built on the site of the first Black-owned shipyard in the country.
The Crossroads Middle School was one of the first charter schools in the city. The recently took over the Commodore John Rogers PreK-Middle School, which was failing. Now both schools are springboards to high school and college. The kids are involved in everything: boat building, vegetable gardening, videos, books, woodworking, etc.

Living Classrooms with adults, too. Their Project SERVE works with those just released with from prison, and their recidivism rate is an astoundingly low 6-7%.

Join us for the fascinating glimpse of history and tremendously-effective holistic education.
