Al Bartlet on exponential growth.
Exponential growth is very rapid growth. Such as always doubling. Example: y = ex is a simple exponential function. Exponential growth is growth that increases by a constant proportion. One of the best examples of exponential growth is observed in bacteria. It takes bacteria roughly an hour to reproduce. If we placed 100 bacteria in an environment and recorded the population size each hour, we would observe exponential growth. We would record 200 at the start of the second hour, 400 at the start of the third, 800 at the start of the fourth, and so on.

World Population Example for Exponential Growth

Population in the world is currently (2019-2020) growing at a rate of around 1.08% per year (down from 1.10% in 2018, 1.12% in 2017 and 1.14% in 2016). The current average population increase is estimated at 82 million people per year.

Lets assume exponential growth and a doubling time of about 70 years because of a 1% growth rate.

Doubling Time = 70 / (%Growth per unit time)

8 billion 2020

16 billion 2090 Vast parts of the natural world (forests) completely destroyed little or no food for the majority of people

32 billion 2160 Society has collapsed and a massive die off of all living creatures has started.
