  1. The Zirconium alloy around the fuel rods creates a reaction with the steam and absorbed the oxygen and eventually releasing hydrogen.  Normally when mixed with air hydrogen catches fire and explodes ; however, the containment buildings were filled with nitrogen which stopped the hydrogen from exploding immediately. 
  2. However, over time the pressure got higher and higher within the reactor building.  Hydrogen started to escape into the reactor building and eventually made it into the air at the top of the building. 
  3. Hydrogen reacted violently with the air at the top of the building and blew it up.  There were hydrogen explosions in four of the buildings as this hydrogen gas escaped from the buildings into the air.
