How safe do you feel? New Jersey ranks 28 out of 50 on the US Peace Index. The 3 most peaceful states are Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire. Maine has been the most peaceful state for 11 years. Louisiana, Tennessee and Nevada are the 3 least peaceful states. Louisiana is the least peaceful state for the 20th year. The South is the least peaceful region; it has highest homicide, violent crime, incarceration rates, and highest rate of gun ownership. The 3 least peaceful countries are Afghanistan, Somalia, and Syria. Peace is essential to resolve global challenges facing humanity. The Global Peace Index (GPI) is the world’s leading measure of national peacefulness. Now in its 7th year, it ranks 162 nations according to their absence of violence. Without peace, we can’t achieve the levels of cooperation, inclusiveness, and social equity necessary to resolve poverty, global health issues, and climate change. The GPI is developed by Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP). It has 22 indicators, ranging from a nation’s level of military expenditure to its relations with neighboring countries and the percentage of prison population. The GPI defines peace as the absence of violence and the absence of the fear of violence. Some experts feel world peace and prosperity can be attained through the realization of 5 fundamental freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want, freedom from fear, and freedom for the environment. These 5 freedoms establish a framework within which all other human rights, and therefore peace, can flourish. Join me and Life Coach Jenn A Nocera for a look at the GPI and what it means to the planet. After the show, please check After Hours at Jersey Coastal Live for additional information.
