I have recently been accused of considering the writings of Paul as being “of no relevance to me” which is some charge as Paul wrote about two thirds of the New Testament. As a new covenant believer and a Gentile by natural birth I actually consider Paul’s words as being of particular importance and relevance to myself. That said, as with all scripture one needs to consider it’s purpose, the issues addressed and as to whether such issues are personally relevant. Surely, as an elderly man I can be excused considering scripture addressed to female youth, while informative, yet not, personally instructive as to appropriate or inappropriate demeanour or conduct. If such is reasonable then it must be equally reasonable to view scriptures that address unbelievers as relating to them alone, to the immature in the faith as to them alone and so on. The result is not to devalue the scripture but to give an emphasis to those parts that relate to oneself, that speak to the heart of the reader and confirm them in their faith as they are at the time of reading. While I am guilty of believing this much we will look at the writings of Paul and see who he is writing to and what he is writing about and people may judge for themselves where I stand on this issue.
