Join me on Wednesday February 27, 2013 as we meet and speak with Jessica Hyejin Lee. Jessica is a Korean American undocumented community organizer with DreamActivist Pennsylvania. She publicly came out as undocumented in March 2012 as part of a civil disobedience to demand the release of an undocumented El Salvadorian detainee. She co-founded SUDDEN Movement (Students for Undocumented Dreams & Decision Equity Now!) to change admissions & public safety policies on college campuses such as Bryn Mawr, Haverford, and Swarthmore Colleges and American University. Join as we discuss what it's like Being a Korean American undocumented immigrant; Coming out of the shadows and being empowered through the concept of identity; Fighting against authorities through confrontational tactics, i.e. not being sorry; and Embracing multiple identities as an activist. DreamActivist Pennsylvania is an undocumented-led activist group that fights to build immigrant power in our communities. We are undocumented, unafraid and unapologetic. Our group is comprised of immigrants: people of color, LGBTQ and gender non-conforming persons, womyn, men, students, workers, parents, and allies. As undocumented immigrants, we believe that the people personally affected must be at the forefront of the immigrant rights struggle. We reject society’s notion of a model immigrant and the demand for cultural assimilation. We stand with all immigrants regardless of criminal record, socioeconomic class, and educational background. We are dedicated to fostering a sustainable immigrant rights movement that fights against the criminalization of our community members. We believe in direct action as a means to achieve that respect.
