Often, a hard thing to process is not that we were sinners, but that we yet are sinners, saved by grace. We are so eager to be what God is making us that we overlook who we are - when the failings of the flesh inevitably appear, we are often surprised. The overconfident saint is the one is the one who will be most surprised should he fail to make heaven, for he convinced himself that his deliverance had been achieved before either the grave or the rapture.
