Your “platform” is what you know, what you have to say, your special experience and expertise combined with who knows you. Who would pay to read your book? Who is willing to purchase your products/ Who would pay just to hear you speak?
A restaurant owner with no customers is going broke. It’s because he doesn’t have a platform. If he did, he could send an email, mobile text message, tweet, Facebook message or post a video on YouTube and fill the restaurant in a couple of hours, every day, for the rest of the week and month and probably for years to come.
A talented, but struggling, author loves her book and really believes her message will change and positively impact the world. But she doesn’t have a platform. If she did – and even if it were small – she could sell 2,000 to 5,000 books in a couple of weeks – enough to be a NY Times Bestselling Author.
A consultant is struggling to trade dollars for hours. Again, no platform. If he had one, he would have a bunch of perspective clients on a waiting list. At that point, fees aren’t even an issue – people don’t even bat an eye when you quote 5 and 6 figure numbers for consulting or speaking.
