The PBS talk-show host explains what it takes for young African Americans to take charge of their destinies while infusing their lives with meaning. “I’ve had the Tavis Smiley Foundation for about 15 years now, and all we do is work with young people on developing their leadership skills. We do that for thousands and thousands of youths all across the country,” Tavis Smiley tells Living by Design host Cathy Holloway. “We have leadership institutes on college campuses and we spend weeks with these kids working with them throughout the year. Untimately, what we teach them is a very simple definition of leadership: You can’t lead people unless you love people. And you can’t save people unless you serve people. To make the most of your life, find something that you love, and that allows you to serve.”
