The New Jersey American Civil Liberties Union has petitioned Federal Authorities to commence an investigation into the Newark, New Jersey Police Department. According to the petition the “Newark Police Department has engaged in a pattern or practice of conduct by law enforcement officers . . . that deprives persons of rights, privileges or immunities secured or protected by the Constitution or laws of the United States.” This conclusion was reached by the ACLU after conducting research, and analyzing complaints and civil actions filed against the Newark Police Department by citizens and its own employees. On Thursday September 16, 2010, our invited guest will be Deborah Jacobs, Executive Director of the New Jersey American Civil Liberties Union. We will discuss the petition filed by the ACLU and management deficiencies of the Newark Police Department that has caused the persistent acts of misconduct.
