As you already know when Ike recently came through and trashed Texas, it also hit my friend Xavier Nelson and his family.

Aside from his property now looking like a bomb had hit it, the house thankfully only has some minor and repairable roof damage, but at this point, the power still has not been restored.

He told me this morning that last night the radio was broadcasting an update (good thing he has one of those hand-cranked ones) and the local power company said that at that point only 15% of the clients in Walker County had been restored.

Xavier also was telling me how he really is getting a whole new appreciation for the things we all seem to take for granted, like washing clothes.

Right now he has to go downstairs and light the grill to boil a couple of pots of water, then drag them back upstairs to wash at least some of the clothes by hand and then get them back downstairs to a makeshift clothes-line he's been able to set up.
