When I was a kid, I heard Music, and lots of it!! everything from the jackson 5 to James Brown & Aretha Franklin (the King & Queen of Soul, respectively) I Heard Marvin Gaye (my favorite) & Easter Phillips, Con Funk Shun (home town heroes-Vallejo) & Earth, Wind & Fire. The Isley Brothers & The Commodores, The Sylvers & The Osmonds, Thelonios Monk, Miles Davis, Donald Bird, Natalie Cole, Minnie Ripperton, Sly & the Family Stone and Slave, Lenny Williams, Rick James (biatch) and Teena Marie, the Beatles, Bread, Seals & Croft, the Doobie Brothers and I'm just skimming over the top of all the music I heard. Fact is I still hear this music today, loud and clear and I don't know if it's me or if that music is just so much better than what I hear in music today. I'm not saying there arent any standouts today (Alisha Keys, Anthony Hamilton, Rashaan Patterson, Ledisi, ) But I still need to continue having music from the 30's to the 80's as part of my listening diet. Am I just so old (musically that is) like back in the day with the old jazz heads, that I just don't want to accept the changing of musical styles and the new fresh sounds that are being produced today? or do I have a legitimate beef with todays music? Simply put for me music is like Hamburgers & Steaks, today is Hamburger only good when it's hot and the older music is like Steaks gets better as it gets older.
