IMMUNE DISEASE SERIES:
In Type 1 Diabetes the immune system attacks the pancreas cells that produce insulin; when the body attacks its own cells this is called an autoimmune disease. Without insulin these diabetics are unable to use sugar (glucose) as fuel. Diabetes is not the only autoimmune disease that family members of Type 1 Diabetics are at risk for developing, in addition to diabetes.
Furthermore, families with this type of diabetes are 15 to 20% more likely than the general population to develop the following autoimmune diseases: Thyroid Disease (such as Graves or Hashimoto's Disease), Adrenal (Addison's disease), Skin (vitilgo light patches), Neurotransmitters and Celiac Diseases.
In this interesting episode Bobbie talks about diabetes and how to manage it with traditional medicinal therapies and alternative treatments.
