I am the author of a new book You Came Here to Die, Didn't You. I'm not a politician, but I have been involved in national politics.  In 1965 I was an eighteen-year-old, white student when I volunteered to be a voter registration worker for Martin Luther King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference.  (SCLC)  After a week of training I found myself in rural, black South Carolina adjusting to a totally different culture and way of life.  My book discusses my adjustment.  Most books about the Civil Rights Movement are written by black Americans or academics.  In my very readable book I discuss everything from hogshead stew, to a Ku Klux Klan torched church, to washing sheets by hand, and to walking miles in search of willing new voters.  We've forgotten how important voting is.  There was a surge when Obama ran for president, but the surge seems to be over.  We have rights in this country, but we also have responsibilities.  That's something that's often forgotten.
