Where does one begin with a vocalist of this ability - and magnitude?  Are they the same in the case of Indra Rios-Moore? Born in the Lower East Side of New York, Indra's Puerto Rican Mom (who named her after a Hindu deity of sky and rain) would keep her indoors.  She was afraid of the dangers OUTSIDE.  So, little Indra would entertain herself with Mom's vast collection of Rock, Soul and Jazz - that latter, we're supposing, partly influenced by Indra's Dad.  Of African-American/Syrian descent - a Jazz bassist: Donald Moore.

Through her teen years, Indra found herself in fascinating evolution.  She had truly been fearful of being on stage - and she was working through that.  Also, because of the early promise that Indra had shown regarding her talent, she was studying classical arias - as well as American Folk songs at camp.  Combined with what was already immersed as inspiration as a child, her inner repertoire expanded.

At 26, she met Danish Jazz saxophonist, Benjamin Traerup.  A year later, they were married and living in Denmark.  And Indra's career began to take shape.  Benjamin and his transplanted wife formed a trio - with bassist, Thomas Sejthen.  The attention that they received translated into accolades, nominations, and then a gift: the Danish Music Award for Best Jazz Vocal.  Three albums later, Indra is continuing to receive praise.  Her voice and the Hybrid sensibility that has always been part of her soul couldn't have arrived at a better time.

When you hear "Heartland", you will hear the echoes of the past (Motown and Pink Floyd).  You'll hear multiple languages.  And you'll feel Church.  As Indra has said: singing helps her move to an emotional place "where the mind doesn't interfere."

Our No Interference Chat Room awaits :)
