Who Are We Bringing Around Our Children?

In light of the recent tragedy of Adrian Peterson’s 2-year old son, we thought it necessary to discuss how thousands of children lose their life at the hands of a violent adult.

Here are some startling facts:

• Nearly five children die every day in the United States from abuse and neglect.
• In 2011, an estimated 1,570 children died from abuse and neglect in the United States.
• More than 78% of reported child fatalities were the result of abuse and neglect caused by one or more of the child victim’s parents.

According to data from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS), 51 States reported a total of 1,545 fatalities.  Based on the data, this translates to an average of five children dying every day from abuse or neglect.

As difficult as it is to hear the truth about this topic, it is necessary to discuss, and to bring awareness to such a horrible crime that so many children fall victim to each day.  It is equally essential for us to discuss those we allow in the presence of our children… do we really know these people?  And how do we know they can be trusted caregivers?
