“It was half-past three on a Saturday afternoon when Mrs. Wilson remembered that she needed a jar of cold cream. She looked around the house to see if one of the older boys was at home, but she only found little Eddie. Eddie was busy oiling an old typewriter that he had picked up in a junk shop for a dollar. It was his most recent treasure.”

Thus begins the story of Little Eddie Goes to Town by Carolyn Haywood. As a boy Mom read this story before putting me down for my nap. I’m sure she would have preferred to read other stories but I insisted on Little Eddie. For me Little Eddie was my story. It also became my destiny.

We all have a destiny. For a few fortunate individuals, they are destined to leave a legacy. Steve Jobs was Apple. Elvis was rock-in-roll. Abe Lincoln was liberty.

I became the Eddie in the story.
