It was bound to happen that we would repeat the question; nature or nuture? what is the significance with masonry study? If we look hard we cannot find a reference to 'take-it-or-leave-it'. We have an unwaivering expectation of gradual self-improvement. And with that comes anecdotes from past generations sharing how they reinforced an atmosphere to enhance the experience. In the background, our Antient Charges outline remedies for problems. Since we are masters of our own imaginations, they have been ignored by all but a small group who keep us balanced. They know it is easier to avoid complications than fix them when they occur. There are always consequences.  For many of us, it is where we begin to realize masonry contains a great many dialogues that I call- how to live a good life, step by step. We have all heard brethren talk about a masonic journey. Some of us find it is reasonable to extrapolate- the journey is as valuable as the destination. In many lodges, the room is full of neophytes, unskilled but eager brethren. We assume they have a need that can be met through masonry. I am not in one of those jurisdictions. Here, need is assumed, often wrongly. Confusion is widespread, yet brethren cling to the idea that they want to experience a more atmospheric version of masonry.  They've become bored with superficiality, though they may not call it that.  So much could be resolved by examining the selection of a candidate.  In spite of shortcomings, masonry grows. When quantitative focus falls off, qualitative focus flourishes. And that brings us to an expectation of dignity.  If there is an overarching need, it is to be taught how to reason. Command takes a back seat to the work it takes to understand we are complex creatures in a complex world. Order is an illusion. Chaos is an illusion. They are points on a continuum of understanding. We look again at a time when the Arts and Science were part of natural philosophy.
